Kwangtung 1912 (year 1) 1 cent Y-417

Kwangtung Province (now Guangdong) is on the south coast of China, and surrounds Hong Kong and Macau. The mint in the city of Guangzhou (Canton) opened in 1888 and issued a large number of coins until closure in 1931. The specimen shown was lot 21610 in Ponterio sale 165 (Hong Kong, April 2012), where it sold for US$1,016. The catalog description[1] noted, “CHINA. Kwangtung. Cent, Year 1 (1912). NGC MS-63 BN. 廣東 分,民國 1 年(1912 年)。NGC MS-63 BN.” A brass type (Y-417a) was issued concurrently with this and is included in the mintage.
