France SB118-22507r.jpg

This specimen was lot 22507 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Ecu, 1702-BB. Strasbourg Mint. Louis XIV (1643-1715). PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, VF Details Secure Holder. Toned. From the Brighton Collection." Shown is a 1702-BB demi-écu aux insignes of the Strasbourg mint in France. Note traces of an undertype; this coin usually comes struck over an earlier half écu, Droulers[2] notes that all known specimens from this mint are overstruck. The obverse dies are leftovers from the earlier buste du type au palmes.

Reported Mintage: 25,003[2] (all on reformed blanks), a scarce date.

Specification: 13.72 g, .917 fine silver, 32-35 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 623, Dr/2 no. 425, KM-325.3; Gad-189a.
