Barbados 1788 penny

Stack's Bowers 2020 ANA sale, lot 22374

This specimen was lot 22374 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $75. The catalog description^[1] noted, "BARBADOS. Penny, 1788. NGC EF Details--Environmental Damage. Wide Date variety. A nicely detailed, evenly worn example of the type with very dark brown patina. Some minor pitting is noted on the pineapple." Barbados, like many islands in the Caribbean, was starved of coinage. This penny was produced under private contract. Many varieties exist but the one shown here seems to be the only one that circulated. The others, probably struck by Boulton and Watt in Birmingham, were sold to collectors.
