This specimen was lot 71111 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "BARBADOS. Penny, 1792. George III. PCGS AU-58 Gold Shield. Population of just one on the PCGS Census. An especially boldly struck Penny with smooth, mark-free fields and very dark brown patina throughout." Barbados, like many islands in the Caribbean, was starved of coinage. This penny was produced under private contract. Many varieties exist but the 1788 issue with the pineapple reverse seems to be the only one that circulated. The others, probably struck by Boulton and Watt in Birmingham, were sold to collectors.

Recorded mintage: 39,000 plus restrikes.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: KM-Tn10; Pr-15.
