United States 1855-S quarter dollar

This type, struck 1853-55 in large quantities, is available in circulated condition. The weight was reduced from 6.68 g to 6.22 g in 1853, along with the other silver coinage, and arrows added 1853-55 to note the change. This is the first year of issue from the San Francisco mint. Tho it is a scarce date, it is more available than any date from San Francisco of the rest of the 1850's and 1860's.

Recorded mintage: 396,400 (highest mintage of all San Francisco quarters prior to 1875).

Specification: 6.22 g, 0.900 fine silver, .180 troy oz ASW, 24.3 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Christian Gobrecht.
