Pontero sale 161, lot 20418

This specimen was lot 20418 in Ponterio sale 161 (Chicago, August 2011), where it sold for $1,725. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Passau. Taler, 1697. Bishop Johann Philipp Von Lamberg 1689-1712. Bust by PH Muller. Toned CHOICE EXTREMELY FINE+." The bishop of Passau's diocese extended over the middle Danube valley of Bavaria and upper Austria but was overshadowed by his wealthier rival, the archbishop of Salzburg. His secular territory was mediatized by Napoleon in 1810 and handed over to Bavaria.
