Colombia 1772-NR VJ 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 23406 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $4,700. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos III gold 8 Escudos 1772 NR-VJ, MS62 NGC. Boldly struck, with full, gleaming mint luster. The surfaces exhibit only a few tiny marks and the overall appearance is far nicer than one might expect of an MS62 certified coin. We doubt you will ever see a nicer example with this stated grade. Rare in this condition." This "standard bust" eight escudos, struck 1772-84, superseded the "rat nose" bust used 1762-71. The Popayán mint also adopted the new bust, dropping the old bust of the prior king, Ferdinand VI, used until 1771. The year marked a debasement from 0.917 fine to 0.901 fine gold.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.901 fine gold, .784 troy oz AGW.
