This specimen was lot 1489 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $4,025. The catalog description[1] noted,

"1771 J 8 escudos. Popayán mint. AU-55 (NGC). Types as above. Large draped and armored bust of Fernando VI to right, CAROLS III in legends around, date below/crowned arms, legends around. Lustrous even yellow gold, some lustre remaining in the recesses, scattered contact and handling marks, and a short cut well hidden in the reverse crown. A scarce and popular issue, the last date of the type. This date represents the last use of the ancient Fernando VI bust, as a standard bust of Carlos III was promulgated in 1772. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
