Heritage sale 3035, lot 31163
Mexico H3035-31163r.jpg

This specimen is among the more popular rarities of Mexican numismatics, being a high grade example of a large glamorous gold coin. The 1740MoMF 8 escudos was one of a series struck 1732-47 during the reign of Philip V (1700-1746). It superseded the gold cobs previously minted. Later dates are not so rare but will still run several thousand dollars at auction. This specimen was lot 31163 in Heritage sale 3035 (Long Beach, September 2014), where it sold for $5,581.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Philip V gold 8 Escudos 1740/30 Mo-MF AU55 NGC, Mexico City mint. An unusually high grade and appealing specimen for this early bust gold type, with only limited friction on the higher points. The overdate is not listed in the Onza book, perhaps an indication of a greater rarity than is indicated in KM."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-10061, KM 148, Fr-8.
