This specimen was lot 23194 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $1,170. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRALIA. 50 Dollars, 2012-P. Perth Mint. NGC MS-70. Issued for the Year of the Dragon. Impressively designed with rich satin fields and mostly reflective designs and deemed flawless by NGC." The year of the dragon was honored with the following:
- silver half oz coin (KM 1663 and 1663a, face value 50 cents),
- silver one oz coin (KM 1664, 1713 and 1793, face value one dollar),
- silver 2 oz coin (KM 1665, face value two dollars),
- silver 5 oz coin (KM 1794, face value 8 dollars),
- silver 10 oz coin (KM 1667, face value ten dollars),
- silver 1 kg coin (KM 1668 and 1668a, face value 30 dollars),
- silver 10 kg coin (KM 1669, face value 300 dollars),
- gold 1/20 oz coin (KM 1670 and 1679, face value 5 dollars),
- gold 1/10 oz coin (KM 1671 and 1671a, face value 15 dollars),
- gold ¼ oz coin (KM 1672 and 1672a, face value 25 dollars),
- gold ½ oz coin (KM 1673, face value 50 dollars, shown here),
- gold 1 oz coin (KM 1674 and 1674a, face value 100 dollars),
- gold 2 oz coin (KM 1675, face value 200 dollars),
- gold 10 oz coin (KM 1676, face value 1000 dollars),
- gold 1 kg coin (KM 1677, face value 3000 dollars),
- gold 10 kg coin (KM 1678, face value 30,000 dollars).
Many come in variations with colored stickers added. The year of the dragon previously occurred in 2000 and a whole suite of collectibles were produced and marketed by the Perth mint.
