St. Gall (1791) pfennig
This specimen was lot 4962 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 2,500 CHF (about US$3,346 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND St. Gallen. Beda Angehrn von Hagenwil, 1767-1796. Pfennig o. J. (1791), Münzstätte des Klosters. 0.44 g. D.T.859, HMZ 2-880a. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich (abbey of St. Gall, Beda Angehrn von Hagenwil, 1767-1796, undated pfennig, circa 1791. Very rare, Extremely fine)." The abbey struck coins until 1783; the city continued coinage after the French occupation until confederation. This undated type is attributed to 1777 by the SCWC, which displays a holed specimen as a plate coin. The canton of St. Gall issued almost no coinage between 1739 and 1786.
