Sincona sale 68, lot 5280

This specimen was lot 5280 in Sincona sale 68 (Zurich, October 2020), where it sold for 16,000 CHF (about US$21,064 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Geneva | Stadt und Kanton, Doppeldukat 1656, Genf. Verziertes Quadrat mit Inschrift und Jahreszahl. Rv. gekrönter Doppeladler mit dem Genfer Wappen auf der Brust. Äusserst selten. Gutes sehr schön. (city and canton of Geneva, double ducat of 1656, Geneva mint. Obverse: rectangular tablet with city name and date; reverse: double-headed eagle with the city arms on the breast. Extremely rare, Good very fine.)"

This type was struck 1654-66 and 1674 and 1690, and all dates are rare.
