France SB818-20455r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20455 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. 2 Franc, 1808-B. Rouen Mint. NGC MS-63. Attractive with deep gray tone in the centers and eye catching blue and yellow iridescence that concentrates at the edges. Magnified inspection reveals surfaces that appear minimally marked for the MS-62 grade." All two francs issued prior to 1859, including this one, were demonetized in 1869 to make way for the succeeding issue which was only 0.835 fine.

Specification: 27 mm diameter, 10 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.

Recorded Mintage: 160,437[1], a better date.

Catalog reference: F.254/5, KM-684.2; Gad-500.
