Stack's Bowers 2019 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72797
Sweden SB1019-72797r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72797 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. 5 Ore, 1862-(star). Stockholm Mint. Carl XV Adolf. NGC MS-64 Red Brown. Tied with just one other red brown specimen as the finest in the NGC census, this charming example offers highly pleasing surfaces and an underlying brilliance." In the reform of 1830, the sixth and third riksdalers were dropped for eighth, quarter and half riksdalers. The skilling, formerly 1/48 riksdaler, became 1/128 riksdaler and new one-sixth, one-third, half, two-thirds, one, two and four skilling issued in copper. The smallest silver denomination, the 1/32 riksdaler, was four skilling. In 1855, the skilling was dropped and 400 öre = 4 riksdaler riksmynt = 1 riksdaler species (the riksdaler species remained unchanged). In 1873, the riksdaler species was dropped and 100 öre = 1 krona (the krona, at 7.5 g, 0.800 fine silver, was slightly smaller than the old riksdaler riksmynt). This type was struck 1860-67 and 1872. The star on reverse is common, the rose on reverse is quite scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 8.5 g, bronze, 28.9 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-707.
