Flanders 1589 1/5 ecu
This specimen was lot 537 in Jean Elsen sale 137 (Brussels, June 2018), where it sold for €420 (about US$585 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Philips II (1555-1598), AR vijfde Philipsdaalder, 1589, Brugge. Met wapen van Portugal. Vz/ Geharnast bb. r. Kz/ Gekroond wapenschild op een Bourgondisch kruis tussen twee vuurijzers. Uiterst zeldzaam Mooie patina. Zeer Fraai à Prachtig. (county of Flanders, Philip II, 1555-98, silver fifth daalder of 1589, Bruges mint, with the arms of Portugal. Obverse: armored bust right; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross between two jewels of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Very scarce, handsome toning, very fine to extremely fine.)"
Flanders is now in the heart of Belgium. This coin was part of an early attempt to issue decimal coinage.
