This specimen was lot 3450 in Sincona sale 83 (Zurich, May 2023), where it sold for 30,000 CHF (about US$40,149 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Salzburg, Erzbistum, Leopold Anton Eleutherius, 1727-1744. 2 Dukaten 1734, Salzburg. Von allergrösster Seltenheit. Gutes vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Künker 268, Osnabrück, September 2015, Los 5677 (archbishopric of Salzburg, Leopold Anton Eleutherius, 1727-1744, double ducat of 1734, Salzburg mint. Of the highest rarity, Good extremely fine)." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1734-35 and is rare. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
