Dietrichstein 1644 thaler Dav-3372
This specimen was lot 1709 in Sincona sale 90 (Zurich, May 2024), where it sold for 2,000 CHF (about US$2,643 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RDR / ÖSTERREICH, Dietrichstein, Fürstentum, Gräfliche Linie Pulgau, Sigismund Ludwig von Wechselstätt, 1631-1664. Taler 1644, Graz. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich. Unregelmässige Patina. (Austrian states, principality of Dietrichstein, Pulgau line, Sigismund Ludwig von Wechselstätt, 1631-64, thaler of 1644, Graz mint. Very rare, Extremely fine, Unevenly toned.)"
The princes of Dietrichstein were not territorial lords but servants to the emperor who were granted the mint right. Several thalers were struck in the seventeenth century, all rare. This one is noted for 1638, 1644 and 1647.
