Dietrichstein 1641 thaler Dav-3373
This specimen was lot 4854 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €5,500 (about US$7,197 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH. DIE ÖSTERREICHISCHEN STANDESHERREN, DIETRICHSTEIN, Sigismund Ludwig von Wechselstätt, 1631-1664. Reichstaler 1641, Graz. R Hübsche Patina, winz. Zainende, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Holy Roman Empire, princes of Dietrichstein, Sigismund Ludwig von Wechselstätt, 1631-64, thaler of 1641, Graz mint. Scarce, handsome patina, minor clip, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
The princes of Dietrichstein were not territorial lords but servants to the emperor who were granted the mint right. Several thalers were struck in the seventeenth century, all rare. This type was struck in 1640-41. It is scarce but not rare like the accompanying double thaler (Dav-A3373).
