Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 1862

This specimen was lot 1862 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €800 (about US$1,140 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Philips II (1555-1598), AR Philipsdaalder, 1557, Brugge. Met titel van koning van Engeland. Vz/ Geharnast bb. r. Met PHILIPPVS in de legende. Kz/ Gekroond wapenschild op een Bourgondisch kruis tussen twee vuurijzers. Zeldzaam Mooie patina. Zeer Fraai/bijna Prachtig. Uit onze lijst 203, april 1999, 912. (county of Flanders, Philip II, 1555-98, silver daalder of 1557, Bruges mint, with the title of king of England in the legend. Obverse: armored bust right, with the king's name spelled in full; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross between two jewels. Rare, nice patina, Very Fine/about Extremely Fine.)"

This type, struck 1557 only, is listed but not photographed in Davenport. Other écus for 1557 include Dav-8643 (bust left) and Dav-8645 (obverse legend is "PHS.D.G.HISP.ANG.Z.REX."). Philip gave up his title of king of England after his wife's death in 1558.
