CNG Lissner sale, lot 338

This specimen was lot 338 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $2,722.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE, Premier Empire. Napoléon I. 1804-1814. AR Quart franc à la tête de nègre laurée. Paris mint; différents: signature/rooster. Pierre-Joseph Tiolier, engraver general. Ch.-Pierre de l’Espine, director. Dated 1808 A. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 65. Beautiful toned gem prooflike BU with great color. Another gem and only coin of this date ever graded. Rare. Thought by the collector to be a proof. Purchased from A. G. Van der Dussen, August 1971." Quarter francs were minted steadily throughout Napoleon's reign but always in small quantities. This issue does not appear in the mint archives and is very rare. Le Franc notes that the known survivors are in high grade, suggesting that they were struck for presentation.

Recorded mintage: unknown, very rare, all uncirculated.

Specification: 1.25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 15 mm diameter, plain edge. Designed by Pierre-Joseph Tiolier (1763-1819). This specimen is Ø15 mm, 1.26 g, 6h axis.

Catalog reference: VG 349; KM 678.1, F.161/2.
