Sincona sale 83, lot 3292
CNG sale Triton XXVII, part of lot 1200

The first specimen was lot 3292 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 650 CHF (about US$870 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "NEPAL, Birendra Bir Bikram, 2028-2058 VS (1971-2001 AD). 5.0 G Asarphi 2031 VS (1974 AD), NGC MS67. Prachtexemplar. Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar (Cabinet piece, Finest certified by NGC)." The second specimen was part of lot 1200 in CNG sale Triton XXVII (New York, January 2024), which did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted, "NEPAL, Shah dynasty. Virendra Vira Vikrama. VS 2028-2058 / AD 1971-2001. Set of three (3) gold coins. Coronation. Dated VS 2031 (AD 1974). All coins: Shriprech (Nepalese royal crown) left within ornate border with legend / Garland over sword within ornate border with legend. Includes: a) AV 10 Gram Asarfi. In NGC encapsulation 4863673-015, graded MS 64. b) AV 5 Gram Asarfi. In NGC encapsulation 4863673-014, graded MS 63. c) AV 2.5 Gram Asarfi. In NGC encapsulation 4863673-013, graded MS 64+. Three (3) coins in lot. An attractive matching set." King Birendra Bir Bikram (ruled 1971-2001) was murdered by his son in a domestic dispute. The king's brother, Gyanendra, ruled until the monarchy was abolished in 2008. The asarphi isn't really a denomination but an indication that the coin is to be traded by its weight, in this case five grams.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 5 g, 0.999 fine gold, this specimen 5.00 g.

Catalog reference: KM 822a, Fr-48.
