This specimen was lot 40229 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $84,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Gold 1000 Pounds, 2018. Llantrisant Mint. Queen's Beasts, Falcon of the P[l]antagen[e]ts. Elizabeth II. SUPERB-GEM PROOF. A tremendous and hefty Kilogram of fine gold from the Queen's Beasts Series, honoring the Falcon of the P[l]antagen[e]ts statue. Fully struck, with no major faults and still in the original box of issue along with the original paperwork. The Queen's Beast Series was produced in honor of 10 Heraldic statues that represent the Genealogy of Queen Elizabeth II. The statues were placed in an Annex of Westminster Abbey for the Queen's coronation in 1953, with each statue weighing approximately 700 Pounds and being 6 Feet tall. The statues now reside in the Canadian Museum of History in Quebec. This example features the Red Dragon of Wales, a historic symbol of Wales mentioned in early Welsh chronicles. This association with Wales was firmly established by Owen Tudor, grandfather of Henry VII." The auctioneers catalogued this a little carelessly as a falcon is featured, not the Welsh dragon. It doesn't seem to have affected the price realized. The current bullion value (August 2024) is about $79,000.

Recorded mintage: 9 proofs.

Specification: 1000 g, 0.999 fine gold, 32.1507 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: S-QBCGE5, Fr-623.
