This specimen was lot 71500 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 100 Pounds, 2018. Llantrisant Mint. NGC PROOF-70 Ultra Cameo. Featuring Britannia and an "oriental" border (in fact, it is a Greco-style maeander pattern border), this one ounce piece is as majestic as can possibly be found. Compare to another specimen designated as a 'first day of issue,' also an NGC PROOF-70 Ultra Cameo, that realized a total of $6,900 [!] in January 2021." In 1987, emulating the krugerrand, the maple leaf, the American gold eagle and other bullion coins, the Royal Mint introduced the Britannia program. Gold one, half, quarter and tenth ounce pieces were coined and marketed. To boost sales, the reverses were changed annually. This design was also struck in silver and platinum.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 34.05 g, 0.917 fine gold, 32.7 mm diameter, 1.000 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: S-BQ22; Fr-499b; KM-Unlisted.
