Mughal Empire AH 986 rupee KM-82.3
This specimen was lot 2476 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "MUGHAL: Akbar I, 1556-1605, AR square rupee, Jaunpur, AH(9)86, mint below obverse, date to left below reverse; stunning strike, NGC graded MS62." This type was struck AH 985-989 and is listed as fairly common. Jaunpur is in central Hindustan near Allahabad and Benares and would later be ruled by the Nawab of Awadh.
