Jean Elsen sale 147, lot 1652

This specimen was lot 1652 in Jean Elsen sale 147 (Brussels, June 2021), where it sold for €110 (about US$161 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon Ier (1804-1814), AR 5 francs, 1806Q, Perpignan. Tête nue. Rare. Beau. (empire of France, Napoleon, 1804-14, silver five francs of 1806, Perpignan mint. Rare, Fine.)"

Shown is a Napoleonic five francs struck at the Perpignan mint (mint mark "Q") in 1806. It is a scarce date. The various designs of Napoleonic five francs form eight distinct types of which this is the fifth, struck 1806-07 with a complete set of this type comprising 23 date and mintmark combinations, some very rare.

Recorded mintage: 77,502[2].

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Nicolas-Guy Brenet and Jean-Pierre Droz.
