Uri and Nidwalden (1506-29) cavallotto
This specimen was lot 4996 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 6,500 CHF (about US$8,699 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND Uri und Nidwalden, Cavallotto (Rössler) o. J. (1506-1529), Bellinzona. Kleiner Doppeladler über den beiden Wappen. Rv. Der heilige Martin zu Pferd nach rechts reitend. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Gutes vorzüglich (cantons of Uri and Nidwalden, undated cavalloto, Bellizona mint. Obverse: doubleheaded eagle over two shields; reverse: St. Martin on horseback divides his cloak with a beggar. Very rare in this condition, Good extremely fine)." This coin is the result of a monetary union between the two cantons in the early sixteenth century, which occasionally included Schwyz. Eight cavalloto made a guldiner or thaler.
