Sincona sale 83, lot 3718

This specimen was lot 3718 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 1,700 CHF (about US$2,275 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "TURKEY, 1 Zer-i mahbûb 1171 H./Jahr 7, Islambul (Istanbul). NGC MS66. Prachtexemplar. Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar (one zeri mahbub of AH 1171, year 7, Istanbul mint. Cabinet piece, Finest certified by NGC)." Turkish issues before the reform of 1839 are a mess of constantly changing denominations as the government attempted to debase its way out of perpetual bankruptcy. This type was struck AH 1171, years 1-9.
