This specimen was lot 74660 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. West/East Germany. Deutsche Demokratische Republik. Ludwig van Beethoven Silver 10 Mark, 1970. NGC MS-66. A highly lustrous Gem with stunning cobalt to cyan toning on the peripheries." This issue from the Communist regime of East Germany commemorates the bicentennial of the birth of Beethoven. One wonders what Beethoven, a snob to the core, would have made of being honored by the proletarian regime.
Recorded mintage: 100,000.
Specification: 17 g, 0.625 fine silver, 31 mm diameter.
