Schaffhausen 1658 4 kreuzer
The first specimen was lot 3501 in Sincona sale 64 (Zurich, June 2020), where it sold for 2,400 CHF (about US$3,007 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWITZERLAND | Schaffhausen | misc, Batzen 1658, Schaffhausen. Äusserst selten in dieser Erhaltung. Fast FDC. (canton of Schaffhausen, batzen of 1658, Schaffhausen mint. Of the highest rarity in this condition, About uncirculated.)"
The second specimen was lot 3435 in Sincona sale 91 (Zurich, May 2024), where it sold for 140 CHF (about US$185 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Schaffhausen, Batzen 1658, Schaffhausen. Variante mit SCAFVSENSIS. Sehr schön. (Switzerland, canton of Schaffhausen, batzen of 1658, Schaffhausen mint, variety with "SCAFVSENSIS". Very fine.)"
This type is listed in the SCWC for 1657-58, where it is not priced above Very Fine. One batzen = four kreuzer. The variety on the second specimen is likely the result of an engraving error as it should be spelled "SCHAFVSENSIS" as on the first specimen.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: billon, the first specimen 2.45 g, the second specimen 2.42 g.
