Sincona sale 70, lot 3096

This specimen was lot 3096 in Sincona sale 70 (Zurich, May 2021), where it sold for 95,000 CHF (about US$126,084 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Basel | Stadt und Kanton. 6 Dukaten 1741, Basel. BASILEA und die acht Vogteiwappen über der Stadtansicht. Im Abschnitt die Jahreszahl und I - HM für den Stempelschneider Johann Jakob (I.) Handmann. Rs. Umschrift in grossen Buchstaben, in der Mitte Basilisk nach rechtsblickend. Das Baslerwappen in einer schildartigen Kartusche. Von grösster Seltenheit. Prachtvoller Erstabschlag. (Switzerland, city and canton of Basel, six ducats of 1741, Basel mint. Obverse: BASILEA and eight neighborhood arms over the view of the city; reverse: basilisk supports the city arms in a baroque cartouche, motto around. Of the highest rarity. NGC MS63 PL, Magnificent first strike.)"

The SCWC lists this among the patterns and notes that it was struck using half thaler dies.
