Mexico 1767-Mo MF 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 3150 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $5,060. The catalog description[1] noted, "1767 MF 2 escudos. Mexico City mint. AU-53 (NGC). Types as above. Light yellow gold with some lustre. Nice eye appeal. A rare type on the 2 escudos denomination and often lacking from major collections. Norweb had a well worn 1764 specimen as the sole example of this design on a 2 escudos, and Gerber did not have any. A prize. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
All Mexican colonial gold may be considered scarce. This type was struck 1762-71 yet, despite the many years of production, is so rare many major collections lack an example.
