Mauritius 1917 2 cents

from the Stack's Bowers June 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72179

This specimen was lot 72179 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $132. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MAURITIUS. 2 Cents, 1917. London Mint. PCGS MS-63 Red Brown Gold Shield. An attractive, lustrous coin with a bright, almost golden hue in the fields." This type was struck 1911-12, 1917, 1920-24 in modest numbers. It accompanied a bronze five cents and cent. Silver quarter, half and one rupees were struck for George V but not until 1934.
