Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 40712

This specimen was lot 40712 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description^[1] noted, "BULGARIA. 5 Leva, 1930. Vienna Mint. Boris III. PCGS MS-65." This one year type is common. Altho not mintmarked, it was likely struck in Budapest. The mounted figure on the obverse is likely intended to be Omurtag, Great Khan of Bulgaria from 814-831. He is known as "the Builder". In 1930, Bulgaria, shorn of territory by the treaty of Versailles, was riven by struggles between the communists and the military establishment.
