CNG Triton XXVIII, lot 959

This specimen was lot 959 in CNG Triton XXVIII (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $4,900. The catalog description[1] noted, "NORWAY. Kristian IV. 1588-1648. AR Daler. Christiana mint. Dated 1638. Crowned and armored bust right, wearing ruff / Crowned lion rampant left, holding ax. Toned. In NGC encapsulation 6931384-002, graded AU 58. From the Drewry Family Collection. Ex El Dorado (14 July 1984), lot 154." This daler was struck for Norway by Christian IV, king of Denmark 1588-1648. Despite a steady issue for 1629-48, this type is rare. The weight was reduced to 28.72 g in 1648 and it's possible many of this type were melted.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 29.23 g, 0.882 fine silver, this specimen 40 mm diameter, 28.90 g, 1 h axis.

Catalog reference: ABH 38; Davenport 3534; KM 12.
