Norway 1637 specie daler rev H3032-25522.jpg

This specimen was lot 25522 in Heritage sale 3032 (Chicago, April 2014), where it sold for $19,975. The catalog description[1] noted, "Christian IV Speciedaler 1637, MS62 NGC. An impressive survivor, and surely among the finest known, with lovely mint bloom and an especially strong strike that renders the central portrait and reverse lion in seldom-rivaled detail. A treasure for the Scandinavian collector that is simply listed as "rare" in the SCWC." This daler was struck for Norway by Christian IV, king of Denmark 1588-1648. Despite a steady issue for 1629-48, this type is rare. The weight was reduced to 28.72 g in 1648 and it's possible many of this type were melted.

Recorded mintage: 50,000.

Specification: 29.23 g, 0.882 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Ahlstrom-37, Dav-3534; KM-12; Sieg-16.1.
