Norway 1640 specie daler Dav-3534
This specimen was lot 5073 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €3,400 (about US$4,677 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NORWEGEN, KÖNIGREICH Christian IV., 1588-1648. Speciedaler 1640, Christiania. 28,87 g RR Winz. Kratzer auf der Rückseite, sonst vorzüglich. Exemplar der Sammlung Münzen und Medaillen aus adeligem Privatbesitz. (kingdom of Norway, Christian IV, 1588-1648, Very rare, minor scratches on the obverse, otherwise extremely fine.)"
This daler was struck for Norway by Christian IV, king of Denmark 1588-1648. Despite a steady issue for 1629-48, this type is rare. The weight was reduced to 28.72 g in 1648 and it's possible many of this type were melted.
Recorded mintage: 50,000.
Specification: 29.23 g, 0.882 fine silver, 42 mm diameter.
