This specimen was lot 1653 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 275 (about US$362 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"10 Mark 1879. Karlsruhe Gutes sehr schön. (grand duchy of Baden, ten mark of 1879, good very fine.)"
This type was struck 1875-81 and 1888. Several German states issued gold five mark in 1877 but the denomination was abandoned in favor of a silver five mark, gold being restricted to ten and twenty mark pieces. This date is scarce.
Recorded mintage: 98,000.
Specification: 3.98 g, 0.900 fine gold, .115 troy oz AGW, this specimen 3.94 g.
