Sedwick sale 25, lot 936

This specimen was lot 936 in Sedwick sale 25 (Winter Park, FL, May 2019), where it sold for $4,462.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Potosi, Bolivia, 1/4 real, 1805, very rare, NGC XF 45, finest and only example in NGC census. Key date of series, this specimen the finest known (none graded at PCGS), deeply toned with underlying luster, choice full strike except for minor flaw from mintmark to rim. NGC #4715670-001." This is an example of a type struck 1796-1809 at Potosi, Bolivia (then called Upper Peru). Silver quarter reales are also known from Mexico, Guatemala, Chile, Peru and Colombia. After independence, production of quarter reales would not resume until 1852.

Recorded mintage: 11,000, a scarce date.

Specification: 0.84 g, 0.896 fine silver.
