This specimen was issued by the Maldives as part of the F.A.O. series. It was accompanied by a 25 rufiyaa featuring a sailing boat. The Maldives are an island group in the Indian Ocean; they were a protectorate of Britain 1887-1968. The natives make their living by fishing. This type was offered in copper-nickel (shown here) and silver (KM 57a) and gold (KM 57b).
Recorded mintage: 7,000 in copper-nickel plus 1,007 in silver and 200 in gold.
