Goldberg sale 117, lot 2584
G117-2584r.jpg

This specimen was lot 2584 in Goldberg sale 117 (Los Angeles, September 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Maundy Fourpence, 1906. Edward VII. Exceptionally nice. Brilliant mint state with mauve and aquamarine toning over mirror surfaces. Choice Uncirculated." The Maundy sets, originally a set of silver one, two, three and fourpence given to the poor, were a fusty tradition by the reign of Edward VII. Only the threepence still matched a coin used in circulation. The sets swiftly passed into the hands of collectors and saved, making them common today.

Recorded mintage: 11,000.

Specification: 1.89 g, 0.925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: S-3986; KM 798.
