Heritage sale 3073, lot 31781

This specimen was lot 31781 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $1,263.60. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Alexander II gold 5 Roubles 1861 CПБ-ПФ UNC Details (cleaned) NGC, St. Petersburg mint. Full mint brilliance with bold definition and light contact marks. We feel that there is no reason to classify this piece as "Cleaned." Much scarcer than one might expect." This type is listed for 1859-85 and is fairly common in circulated condition. In 1886, the standard was revised to match the French twenty francs d'or, resulting in a weight reduction to .186 troy oz (see KM Y42).
