Heritage sale 3020, lot 24499

This specimen was of lot 24499 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $7,050. The catalog description[1] noted, "Felipe V gold Cob 8 Escudos 1737-N, XF45 NGC, nicely toned with well-centered details. The date, L mintmark and N assayer are all very clear. An attractive example of this very popular coinage. 27 grams (on holder.)." This type is recorded for 1710-47. The Mexico City mint was converted to milled coinage in 1732-34 but Lima would not follow suit until 1751.

Recorded mintage: 159,179.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW.
