This specimen was lot 714 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $1,997.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony, Albertine line. Taler, 1591 HB. Dresden Mint. Christian I (1586-91). NGC MS-62. Dark iridescent toning with very crisp details. From the Rockaway Collection." Saxony was a wealthy state at the end of the sixteenth century and was blessed with numerous silver mines. Many thalers were produced. This one marks the death of the duke.
