Sincona sale 73, lot 1164

This specimen was lot 1164 in Sincona sale 73 (Zürich, November 2021), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND | Sachsen, Herzogtum, ab 1547 Kurfürstentum, ab 1806 Königreich | Albertiner. Christian I. 1586-1591. Taler 1591, Dresden. Auf den Tod des Kurfürsten. Selten. Fast vorzüglich. Feine Patina. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, Albertine line, Christian I, 1586-91, thaler of 1591, Dresden mint, on the death of the elector. Rare, About extremely fine, Nicely toned.)"

Saxony was a wealthy state at the end of the sixteenth century and was blessed with numerous silver mines. Many thalers were produced. This one marks the death of the duke and was accompanied by a double thaler (Dav-9815).
