Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 40564

This specimen was lot 40564 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $384. The catalog description^[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Salzburg. Taler, 1644. Salzburg Mint. Paris von Lodron. PCGS EF-45. From the Augustana Collection." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1623-53 and is one of the commonest thalers of the seventeenth century. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
