Sincona sale 23, lot 3125

This specimen was lot 3125 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Salzburg, Erzbistum, Sigismund von Schrattenbach, 1753-1771 Taler 1770. Kleines Brustbild. Sehr schön-gutes sehr schön. (Germany, archbishopric of Salzburg, Sigismund von Schrattenbach, 1753-1771, thaler of 1770, small bust, very fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1769-70 only and is slightly scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 27.92 g.

Catalog reference: Zöttl 3010. Probszt 2298, Dav-1261; KM-420.
