This specimen was lot 31225 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "Spain: Charles II 4 Reales 1683 (Aqueduct)-B/R MS65 NGC Segovia mint. 3 Arches; Dots at Mintmark variety. A highly original gem example of the issue, coated in a sheath of gray patina with copper-russet and olive highlights surrounding the raised surfaces. Obvious underlying luster and a bold strike further complement these features. Struck towards the ends on the die's life, with numerous interesting cracks seen on the obverse. A true rarity in this condition and among the very finest survivors of the type. Ex. D. Moore Collection." This equivalent of a half dollar was struck at the Segovia mint in 1683-85 during the reign of king Charles II. This well struck, nicely centered coin may be contrasted with the crude cobs being minted at the Latin American mints, where screw presses were not installed until the 18th century.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.73 g, 0.931 fine silver.
Catalog reference: Cayón-7461, KM 200, Cal-543.
