Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 51224
SB124-51224 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 51224 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 1/4 Real, 1815-L. Lima Mint. Ferdinand VII. NGC VF-30. A seldom-seen wholesome example of this SCARCE date. While circulated, it remains free of any problems or distractions and exhibits pleasing matte gray surfaces. From the EMO Collection. Privately purchased from Freeman Craig." Two types of cuartillas were struck at the beginning of the series: KM 99 (portrait type) struck 1792-96 and KM 102.1 (lions/castles without value) struck 1794-96. Both are scarce compared to the regular lions and castles type struck 1796-1821, of which an example is shown here. The SCWC divides the cuartillas of Charles IV from those of Ferdinand VII but there was no change in design.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.84 g, 0.896 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-15009, EMO-502 (Plate coin); KM-108; Cal-266.
