Schulman 385-0271r.jpg

This specimen was lot 271 in Schulman auction 385 (Amsterdam, July 2025), where it sold for €300 (about US$425 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ZWOLLE. 1/2 Leeuwendaalder, 163(7), Silver Type II. Ridder achter stadswapen naar rechts MO. ARG. CIVITA - . ZWOL. AL. IMP. Kz. klimmende leeuw met groot Zwols wapenschild op de borst tussen jaartal rozetje .DA. PACEM. DOMINE. IN. DIEBVS. NOST. RRR. Dit stuk is het mooiste exemplaar dat wij kennen, het laatste cijfer is bij dit type ALTIJD zeer zwak uitgemunt. Zeer fraai. (city of Zwolle, half lion dollar of 1637, type II. Obverse: knight stands behind the city arms facing right; reverse: large lion rampant supports the Zwolle arms, dividing the date, rosette mintmark. Very rare; this is the finest example that we know of; the last digit of the date is always weak. Very fine.)"

Lion daalders were struck in most of the provinces that today make up the Netherlands with a few half daalders also noted. This type is recorded in the SCWC for Zwolle for 1637-44 and is fairly common. Other half lion daalders are recorded from Zwolle until 1652. Zwolle is a town in the province of Overijssel.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.84 g, 0.750 fine silver; this specimen 13.48 g.
