This specimen was lot 5063 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it sold for $1,552.50. The catalog description ^[2] noted, "Italian States - Tuscany. Tallero, 1607 (Pisa). Ferdinando I de Medici, 1587-1608. Radiate-crowned and cuirassed half figure right, holding scepter. Reverse: Medici arms, shield supported on crowned Maltese cross. Natural edge flaw. Lustrous. Rare in this grade. NGC graded MS-63." Pisa, after a long career as an independent city state in the Middle Ages, fell under Florentine domination in Renaissance times. After the Florentine republic collapsed, Pisa became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, ruled by the Medicis until 1723. The type is listed in the SCWC for 1601-08.
